Is there a difference between Neutral English voiceover and English accent voiceover?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

I started off my day in my studio very confused this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was contacted by a client asking if I only recorded as a British ‘English’ voiceover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s how the conversation went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Client: <\/em><\/strong> Hi Guy, you just record as a British accent voiceover don’t you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: <\/em><\/strong>Yes, that’s me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Client: <\/em><\/strong> Oh ok, we are looking for a VO artist<\/a> who does a neutral English accent<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me: <\/em><\/strong> Yes, that’s me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my head: <\/em><\/strong> You what?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Client: <\/em><\/strong> You do neutral English voiceover as well?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my head:<\/em><\/strong> Eh?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/em><\/strong> Erm…yes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my head: <\/em><\/strong> What’s happening? Who am I?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I record voice overs in a neutral English<\/a> accent daily. My accent is neutral, not particularly tied to any specific region within the UK. I’m capable of delivering a full Received Pronunciation (RP) accent upon request. However, I understand its limited usage and potential to create distance with some audiences due to its perceived elitism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s right, those in the UK who are naturally RP are few and far between and it’s an accent that has fallen out of favour in recent times. While I can provide voiceover in RP, I’m more frequently engaged for projects requiring a relaxed English voice with a neutral accent<\/strong>, particularly for corporate videos<\/a> and british neutral accent narrator for explainers<\/a>. It’s worth noting that clear pronunciation does not require ‘received pronunciation’.  After all, someone speaking in American English or with a mid Atlantic accent can certainly have clear pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the UK regional accents are very popular for some areas of voice over these days.  However, in formal settings, neutral English accents are probably more commonly used over regional accents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
